I could build a PC that's twice as good as the top-of-the-range Alienware PC for the same price. Or build a PC that is equally as good as the Alienware PC for half the price.

Building your own is the ONLY way to go in my opinion. It's cheaper than buying pre-builts, and you end up with a better PC in the end.
Plus, building it is a lot of fun. Not as complicated as people think either.
Asus make great quality components.
