The desktop is made to place items on it.
The desktop should be as minimalistic as possible. It's much more aesthetically pleasing that way.

No icons, no folders. Keep it clean. Place everything in the user directory which contains all of your main folders (Documents, music, pictures, etc). Put the shortcuts you use a lot on your taskbar (Internet browser, music/media player, anything else you use a lot).
Of course this is just my opinion.

that's what i do. and then I place the user directory on its own raid 0 partition. However i think when you have a really big desktop you could place the most used thing on there.
