^that size is good enough for me, but i would prefer that you don't cut the pics of the 2 chars (i mean don't cut off any parts, just put the 2 chars in the sig, don't crop it, maybe resize)
as for color of background, hmm, i really don't know what to say. can you save a temporary file first so if you finished the color and it does not look good, you can still change the color only? is that possible? if not possible, then i guess anything dark-themed (optional will be both dark-themed and crimson-themed, crimson as in bloody)

ok i made a sample for u and for the char on the right side i had to crop it a lil bit otherwise its gonna look smaller than the other char and about the left side char i had to crop it a lil bit to the left but ive put each char as it is (as u can see in second picture)
and about the backgound i can change it if u want to ( remember its just a sample)

for the color, try something even darker than that gray, then try to put some red (not necesarily blood itself, but make it dark/crimson-themed)
